Important: What Anti-Nausea Is and What This Page Covers
Zofran is the brand name for ondansetron, a prescription anti-nausea medication. It is delivered through several of our drips for clients dealing with severe nausea and vomiting from causes like stomach flu, food poisoning, hangovers, migraines, and certain medication side effects.
This page covers what Zofran does, how it stops nausea so effectively, who should use it, and who should not. Zofran is a prescription medication, and our medical provider determines whether it is appropriate for you during intake.
If your nausea or vomiting is severe, persistent, includes blood, or comes with severe abdominal pain or other concerning symptoms, see a doctor or go to the ER. IV anti-nausea support is for typical nausea, not for medical emergencies.

What Is Anti-Nausea?
Zofran is the brand name for ondansetron, a prescription medication first approved by the FDA in 1991. It belongs to a class of drugs called serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonists. It was originally developed to prevent nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy and has become one of the most widely used anti-nausea medications in medicine.
Zofran comes in several forms:
- Oral tablets and dissolvable tablets
- Liquid solution
- Injection
- IV form
The IV form is what we use in our drips. It works fastest and most reliably, especially in clients who cannot keep oral medication down.
Hospitals, ERs, surgical recovery rooms, and obstetric units use Zofran routinely. It has become a staple of nausea management in many medical settings, partly because of its strong effectiveness and minimal side effects compared to older anti-nausea medications.

How Anti-Nausea Works in Your Body
Blocking Serotonin Receptors
Zofran works by blocking serotonin 5-HT3 receptors in two key places: the digestive tract and the part of the brain that triggers vomiting. Serotonin is the main signal that triggers the vomiting reflex. When you have something in your gut that your body wants to expel (a virus, food poisoning, alcohol, certain medications), specialized cells in your gut release serotonin, which signals to your brain to vomit.
By blocking these serotonin receptors, Zofran essentially turns off the vomiting signal at the source. The result is that even when you have something in your gut that would normally make you vomit, the signal does not reach your brain effectively.
Speed of Effect
IV Zofran starts working within 10 to 15 minutes. This is dramatically faster than oral medication, which has to be absorbed through your stomach, which is exactly the part of your body that is upset. Many clients tell us this is the fastest relief from severe nausea they have ever experienced.
Selective Action
Zofran is more selective than older anti-nausea medications. Older anti-nausea medications often caused significant side effects like sedation, dizziness, and even involuntary movements. Zofran's selectivity means it shuts down nausea without these issues for most clients.
What Anti-Nausea IV Helps With
Premium IV Drips Tailored to Your Wellness Goals
GLP-1 Medication Side Effects
Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound commonly cause nausea, especially during dose changes. Zofran can help on the worst days.
Post-Procedure Nausea
Some procedures or anesthesia leave clients nauseous for hours or days. With surgeon clearance, Zofran can support recovery.
Motion Sickness Recovery
After cruises, long flights, or car trips, severe motion sickness can leave you nauseous for hours. Zofran helps.
Stomach Flu (Viral Gastroenteritis)
Acetaminophen is not an NSAID. It works through different pathways. Acetaminophen reduces pain and fever but has minimal anti-inflammatory effect. Toradol works for inflammation; acetaminophen does not. Acetaminophen is gentler on the stomach but harder on the liver. Both can be used together for stronger relief.
Food Poisoning
Severe food poisoning often has a recovery phase where you are still nauseous after the worst is over. Zofran provides relief during this phase.
Severe Hangover Nausea
Bad hangovers can include severe nausea and vomiting. The Hangover IV with Zofran is one of our most popular bookings for severe hangover situations.
Migraine-Related Nausea
Many migraines come with severe nausea. The Migraine IV with Zofran addresses both the headache and the nausea simultaneously.

What Zofran Cannot Do
- It does not cure the underlying cause of nausea (the virus, food poisoning, etc. has to run its course)
- It does not work for all types of nausea (motion sickness during travel may need different medications)
- It does not replace IV fluids for dehydration (the fluids do separate work)
- It does not eliminate the need for medical care if you have severe symptoms
- It is not a treatment for any specific disease

Is Anti-Nausea Safe?
Zofran has been used in clinical settings for over 30 years and has a well-established safety profile. It is one of the most widely prescribed anti-nausea medications in the world.
Possible side effects:
- Mild headache (the most common side effect)
- Constipation
- Mild fatigue
- Mild dizziness
- Allergic reactions in rare cases
Zofran has been associated with QT interval prolongation, a heart rhythm effect, especially at higher doses or in people with certain heart conditions. We screen for this risk during intake.
Zofran is generally considered safe in pregnancy, though some studies have raised questions about possible effects on the fetus. The FDA's current guidance is that Zofran can be used in pregnancy when benefits outweigh risks. We require OB/GYN clearance for any pregnant client and only use Zofran with specific approval.

Who Should Not Use Anti-Nausea
Zofran is not appropriate for clients with:
- Allergies to ondansetron or other 5-HT3 antagonists
- Long QT syndrome or significant heart rhythm abnormalities
- Severe liver disease (dose adjustment may be needed)
- Pregnancy without OB/GYN clearance
- Phenylketonuria (PKU) for the orally dissolving tablet form (does not apply to IV)
- Children under age 12 (we treat clients ages 12 and up at 100 lbs and up with parent present)
Tell our medical provider during intake about all medical conditions, medications, and allergies. Some medications interact with Zofran, including certain antidepressants, certain antibiotics, and medications affecting heart rhythm.
Frequently Asked Questions
How fast does Zofran work?
Most clients feel the urge to vomit fade within 10 to 15 minutes of starting an IV with Zofran. Full nausea relief typically follows within 30 minutes.
How long does the relief last?
A single IV dose of Zofran typically provides 4 to 8 hours of strong nausea relief, with declining effects for several more hours.
How much does a Zofran-containing drip cost?
Migraine IV (which contains Zofran) is $349. The Hangover IV (which also contains Zofran) is $299. There are no hidden travel fees in our standard service area.
Is Zofran safe during pregnancy?
Generally yes, with OB/GYN clearance. Zofran is one of the most commonly used anti-nausea medications during pregnancy. The FDA classifies it as Pregnancy Category B in earlier years; current guidance allows use when benefits outweigh risks. We always require OB/GYN clearance for pregnant clients.
Will Zofran make me sleepy?
Most clients do not feel sedated. Some experience mild drowsiness. Zofran is generally less sedating than older anti-nausea medications.
Can I take Zofran orally instead of IV?
If you can keep oral medication down, oral Zofran works. The advantage of IV Zofran is that it works when you cannot keep oral medication down due to vomiting.
How is Zofran different from Pepto-Bismol?
Completely different medications. Pepto-Bismol is for stomach upset, indigestion, and mild diarrhea. Zofran is for nausea and vomiting from any cause. They work through entirely different mechanisms.
Can I take Zofran with other medications?
Most medications are compatible. Some medications affect heart rhythm and combining them with Zofran can increase the risk of QT prolongation. Tell our medical provider about all medications during intake, including antidepressants and antibiotics.
How often can I get Zofran?
Zofran is for acute use. We do not recommend frequent use without specific medical reasoning. If you have chronic nausea, see a doctor for evaluation.
Will Zofran cure my stomach flu?
No. The flu has to run its course; your immune system does that work. Zofran manages the nausea symptoms while your body clears the virus.
Can children get Zofran?
Children can be prescribed Zofran by their pediatrician. We treat children ages 12 and up at 100 lbs and up with parental consent and a parent or guardian present throughout the appointment.
Is Zofran addictive?
No. Zofran is not a controlled substance and has no addiction potential.
Will Zofran cause constipation?
Mild constipation is a possible side effect, especially with repeated use. Single doses for acute nausea rarely cause significant constipation.
Can I drive after a Zofran drip?
Most clients can drive normally after a Zofran drip. If you feel any drowsiness or dizziness, wait until you feel fully alert before driving.
Are the nurses trained to give Zofran?
Yes. All Zen IV Spa nurses are licensed registered nurses (RNs) trained in IV medication administration. All treatments are also overseen by a licensed nurse practitioner or medical provider.
