Important: What Toradol Is and What This Page Covers
Toradol is the brand name for ketorolac, a prescription anti-inflammatory medication. It is delivered through our pain-relief drips for acute pain situations like migraines, severe period cramps, and post-event muscle pain.
This page covers what Toradol does, how it compares to other anti-pain options, who should use it, and who should not. Toradol is a prescription medication, and our medical provider determines whether it is appropriate for you during the intake call before every treatment.
If you have severe, sudden, or unexplained pain, see a doctor for evaluation before relying on IV pain support. Toradol is for acute pain support, not chronic pain conditions or pain that may indicate a medical emergency.

What Is Anti-Pain?
Toradol is the brand name for ketorolac tromethamine, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It belongs to the same family as ibuprofen and naproxen but is significantly more potent. It was first approved by the FDA in 1989.
Toradol is unique among NSAIDs because it is approved for use as an injection or IV. Most NSAIDs are only available in oral form. The injectable form makes Toradol useful in clinical situations where you need fast, strong anti-inflammatory and anti-pain effects, especially when oral medication is not practical.
Hospitals, ERs, surgical recovery rooms, and clinics use Toradol regularly. It has become a staple of acute pain management in many medical settings. Wellness IV therapy has adopted Toradol as part of pain-relief protocols for migraines, severe cramps, and post-event recovery.

How Anti-Pain Works in Your Body
Like other NSAIDs, Toradol works by blocking enzymes called cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2). These enzymes are responsible for producing prostaglandins, hormone-like substances involved in inflammation, pain, and fever.
Reducing Prostaglandins
Prostaglandins are the main chemical signals that cause pain, inflammation, fever, and muscle contractions during many conditions. They cause:
- The throbbing pain of headaches and migraines
- The cramping pain of severe periods
- The throbbing pain of injuries
- Muscle inflammation after exercise
- Fever during illness
By blocking the enzymes that produce prostaglandins, Toradol reduces these effects.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects
In addition to pain relief, Toradol reduces inflammation at the source. This is why it works well for inflammatory pain like sports injuries, post-surgical pain, and severe cramping.
Speed and Potency
Compared to oral ibuprofen, IV Toradol works faster and reaches higher concentrations in your bloodstream. Many clients describe feeling pain relief within 15 to 30 minutes of starting an IV with Toradol. The same dose of ibuprofen taken orally would take an hour or more to start working and would not reach the same blood levels.
How Anti-Pain Compares to Other Pain Options
Premium IV Drips Tailored to Your Wellness Goals
Toradol vs Ibuprofen
Both are NSAIDs that block COX enzymes. Toradol is significantly more potent. A single 30 mg IV dose of Toradol provides similar anti-inflammatory effect to 800 mg of oral ibuprofen, but reaches your bloodstream much faster. Toradol is given by injection or IV; ibuprofen is oral. Both have similar side effect profiles at equivalent doses.
Toradol vs Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
Acetaminophen is not an NSAID. It works through different pathways. Acetaminophen reduces pain and fever but has minimal anti-inflammatory effect. Toradol works for inflammation; acetaminophen does not. Acetaminophen is gentler on the stomach but harder on the liver. Both can be used together for stronger relief.
Toradol vs Opioids
Opioids work through entirely different mechanisms by binding to receptors in your nervous system. They are typically reserved for severe pain that does not respond to NSAIDs and acetaminophen. Opioids carry significant addiction risk; Toradol does not. We do not provide opioid medications through our IV therapy.
Toradol vs Aspirin
Aspirin is also an NSAID but works through slightly different mechanisms. It has stronger blood-thinning effects than Toradol or ibuprofen. Aspirin is typically used for cardiovascular protection at low doses, not for acute pain at high doses.

What Anti-Pain IV Helps With
Acute Migraine Attacks
This is one of the most common uses. The combination of anti-pain and anti-inflammation effects makes Toradol particularly useful for migraines, which involve both pain and inflammatory processes in blood vessels around the brain.
Severe Period Cramps
Period cramps are caused by prostaglandins. By blocking prostaglandin production, Toradol can dramatically reduce severe cramps. The Migraine IV with Toradol is one of our most popular drips for menstrual relief.
Post-Event Muscle Pain
After a marathon, intense workout, or particularly hard training session, Toradol can reduce inflammation and pain. This is helpful when oral options are not enough.
Tension Headaches
Severe tension headaches that come with stress and dehydration can respond to Toradol combined with hydration and magnesium.
Hangover Pain
Severe hangover headaches and body aches can respond to Toradol, which is why our Hangover IV includes it.
Acute Inflammation
Inflammatory flare-ups from various sources can respond to Toradol-supported drips. For chronic inflammatory conditions, see a specialist.

What Anti-Pain Cannot Do
- It is not a treatment for chronic pain conditions
- It does not work well for nerve pain (neuropathic pain typically requires different medications)
- It cannot prevent migraines from happening (prevention requires broader work)
- It does not address the underlying cause of pain (you still need to figure out why you are in pain)
- It does not work for everyone (response varies by person and pain type)
- It cannot be used long-term

Is Anti-Pain Safe?
Toradol has been used in clinical settings for over 30 years and has a well-established safety profile when used appropriately. Single doses for acute pain support are generally well tolerated.
Possible side effects:
- Mild stomach upset
- Mild headache (paradoxical, in some people)
- Dizziness
- Mild drowsiness
- Fluid retention
- Increased blood pressure (usually mild and temporary)
Toradol carries some risks that the FDA flags with a black box warning, particularly for long-term or high-dose use. We use single doses for acute pain support, which carries far less risk than long-term use, but the warnings exist:
- Gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers (uncommon with single doses)
- Kidney issues with long-term use or in people with kidney disease
- Cardiovascular events with long-term use (uncommon with single doses)
- Allergic reactions in people allergic to NSAIDs
Our medical provider screens carefully during intake to identify clients for whom Toradol is not appropriate.

Who Should Not Use Anti-Pain
Toradol is not appropriate for clients with:
- Allergies to NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin)
- Active or history of stomach ulcers or GI bleeding
- Active kidney disease or kidney function issues
- Severe heart failure
- Recent heart attack or stroke
- Active bleeding or bleeding disorders
- Pregnancy in the third trimester (and generally avoided in earlier pregnancy)
- Aspirin-induced asthma
- Surgery within 72 hours (Toradol can affect bleeding)
- Active liver disease
- Children under 17 (special considerations)
Tell our medical provider during intake about all medical conditions, medications, and allergies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How fast does Toradol work?
Most clients feel pain relief within 15 to 30 minutes of starting an IV with Toradol. Maximum effect is typically reached within an hour.
How long does the relief last?
A single IV dose of Toradol typically provides 4 to 6 hours of strong relief, with declining effects for several more hours. Most clients are back to normal pain management with oral options after the IV effect fades.
How much does a Toradol-containing drip cost?
Migraine IV (which contains Toradol) is $349. The Hangover IV is $299. There are no hidden travel fees in our standard service area.
How often can I get Toradol?
Toradol is for acute use, not regular use. We do not recommend booking Toradol-containing drips more than a few times per month. If you need pain relief that often, see a doctor for evaluation.
Will Toradol make me drowsy?
Some clients feel mild drowsiness. We recommend resting after a Toradol drip and avoiding driving for several hours.
Can I take ibuprofen after a Toradol drip?
Wait at least 4 to 6 hours after a Toradol drip before taking oral NSAIDs. Combining them too closely increases side effect risk. Talk to our medical provider about timing.
Is Toradol safe during pregnancy?
No. Toradol is not used during pregnancy, especially the third trimester, where it can cause complications. We require OB/GYN clearance for any pregnant client and do not provide Toradol drips during pregnancy.
Will Toradol work for nerve pain?
Generally not as well as for inflammatory pain. Nerve pain often requires different medications (gabapentin, pregabalin, certain antidepressants). See a doctor for nerve pain evaluation.
Can I take Toradol with other medications?
Most medications are compatible. Toradol can interact with blood thinners, certain blood pressure medications, lithium, and methotrexate. Tell our medical provider about all medications during intake.
Is Toradol stronger than morphine?
For some types of acute pain, single-dose Toradol provides similar relief to morphine. They work through completely different mechanisms. Toradol does not have the addiction risk of morphine.
Can Toradol cure my migraines?
No. Toradol provides relief for an acute attack. It is not a long-term migraine treatment. If you have frequent migraines, work with a neurologist on prevention strategies.
Why not just take ibuprofen?
If oral ibuprofen works for your pain, take it. The IV Toradol is for situations where oral options are not enough or not practical (severe nausea, vomiting, fast-acting needs).
Is Toradol controlled or addictive?
No. Toradol is not a controlled substance and has no addiction potential. This is one of its advantages over opioid pain medications.
Can children get Toradol?
Children require special considerations. We treat children ages 12 and up at 100 lbs and up with parental consent and a parent or guardian present throughout the appointment.
Are the nurses trained to give Toradol?
Yes. All Zen IV Spa nurses are licensed registered nurses (RNs) trained in IV medication administration. All treatments are also overseen by a licensed nurse practitioner or medical provider.
