The Foundation of Every IV Drip
Every IV drip starts with a base fluid. Before any vitamin, mineral, or medication is added, there is a clear bag of fluid that delivers everything to your bloodstream. The two most common base fluids in wellness IV therapy are normal saline and Lactated Ringers. They are the foundation of how IV therapy works, and most people have never thought about them.
If you have ever wondered exactly what is in that IV bag, this page is for you. Both fluids are sterile, balanced solutions designed to safely match the chemistry of your bloodstream. Each has slightly different properties, and we use them in different situations based on what your body needs.

What Is Normal Saline?
Normal saline (also called 0.9 percent sodium chloride solution) is a sterile mix of water and sodium chloride at a concentration that matches the salt content of your blood. The 0.9 percent refers to 9 grams of sodium chloride per liter of water.
This concentration is called "isotonic," which means it has the same osmotic pressure as your blood. This matters because if a fluid is more concentrated (hypertonic) or less concentrated (hypotonic) than your blood, it can cause cells to shrink or swell as fluid moves in or out. Isotonic fluids do neither; they integrate smoothly with your bloodstream.
Normal saline contains:
- Sterile water
- Sodium chloride (table salt) at 0.9 percent
- Trace amounts of stabilizers
That is it. No other electrolytes. No vitamins. No additives. It is one of the simplest and most studied fluids in modern medicine, used in hospitals worldwide for over a century.
What Are Lactated Ringers?
Lactated Ringers (also called LR or RL) is a balanced electrolyte solution that more closely matches the chemistry of your blood than normal saline. It was originally developed in the 19th century by Sydney Ringer, with later modifications by Alexis Hartmann.
Lactated Ringers contains:
- Sterile water
- Sodium chloride
- Sodium lactate
- Potassium chloride
- Calcium chloride
The lactate component is what gives the solution its name. Lactate is metabolized by the liver into bicarbonate, which helps maintain healthy blood pH. This makes Lactated Ringers slightly buffering, while normal saline is acidic compared to blood.
Lactated Ringers is often preferred for situations involving significant fluid replacement or recovery, including:
- Severe dehydration
- Post-surgical recovery
- Burn recovery
- Sports recovery
- Trauma situations
Normal Saline vs Lactated Ringers: Which Is Better?
Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on your specific situation. Here is a quick comparison:
| Property | Normal Saline | Lactated Ringers |
|---|---|---|
| Sodium content | 154 mEq/L | 130 mEq/L |
| Chloride content | 154 mEq/L | 109 mEq/L |
| Potassium | None | 4 mEq/L |
| Calcium | None | 3 mEq/L |
| Lactate (buffer) | None | 28 mEq/L |
| pH (approximate) | 5.5 (acidic) | 6.5 (closer to blood) |
| Best for | General hydration, simple replacement | Significant replacement, recovery, trauma |
For most wellness IV therapy purposes, both work well. Normal saline is more commonly used for general wellness drips. Lactated Ringers is sometimes preferred when significant fluid replacement is needed, like severe dehydration or recovery situations.
How IV Fluids Work in Your Body
Premium IV Drips Tailored to Your Wellness Goals
Kidney Filtration
Your kidneys depend on adequate blood flow and fluid volume to filter waste effectively. When you are dehydrated, kidney filtration slows. IV fluids restore blood volume and support the kidneys in clearing waste products.
Speed Compared to Drinking Water
Drinking water has to go through your digestive system before reaching your bloodstream. Your gut absorbs water at a limited rate, especially when your stomach is upset, you are nauseous, or you have been dehydrated long enough that gut function has slowed. IV fluids bypass all of this. One liter of IV fluid reaches your bloodstream in 30 to 45 minutes.
Direct Bloodstream Delivery
When fluid drips into your vein, it goes directly into your bloodstream. From there, it circulates throughout your body, reaching every tissue and cell. The fluid restores blood volume, which had likely dropped if you were dehydrated.
Cellular Hydration
Once in your bloodstream, fluid moves into your cells through normal cellular processes. Mild dehydration causes cells to shrink slightly. IV fluid restores their normal size and function, supporting everything from skin appearance to muscle function to cognitive performance.
What IV Fluids Help With
Dehydration Recovery
The most direct use. After heavy alcohol, illness, intense exercise, or hot weather, IV fluids restore hydration faster than drinking water. Most clients feel relief within 20 to 30 minutes.
Hangover Recovery
Alcohol is a diuretic that pulls fluid from your body. The dehydration is responsible for many hangover symptoms. IV fluids reverse this dehydration directly.
Heat Exhaustion Recovery
Heavy sweating loses fluid and electrolytes. IV fluids replace what was lost faster than oral options can.
Stomach Flu Recovery
Vomiting and diarrhea cause significant fluid loss. Once you are no longer in active medical crisis but still depleted, IV fluids speed your recovery.
Post-Workout Recovery
Hard training drains fluids. IV fluids support faster recovery between sessions.
Travel Recovery
Long flights are dehydrating due to dry cabin air. IV fluids support recovery from travel-related dehydration.
Pre-Event Hydration
Many clients book hydration IVs before weddings, photo shoots, presentations, and other events to start at peak.
Foundation for All Other Drip Ingredients
Whatever else is in your drip (vitamins, minerals, medications), the IV fluid is what carries it into your bloodstream. The hydration alone provides benefits beyond what the additives do.

What IV Fluids Cannot Do
- They cannot cure infections (only fluids; you may still need medical care)
- They cannot replace severe blood loss (that requires medical transfusion)
- They cannot fix the underlying cause of dehydration
- They cannot replace ongoing fluid loss if you are actively losing more
- They are not a treatment for any specific disease

Are IV Fluids Safe?
Both normal saline and Lactated Ringers have some of the strongest safety records of any medical product. They have been used in hospitals worldwide for over a century with extremely few adverse events when used appropriately.
Possible side effects:
- Mild swelling at the IV site
- Cold sensation in the arm during infusion
- Rare allergic reactions to the IV equipment (latex, adhesive)
IV fluids may not be appropriate in some conditions. Tell our medical provider during intake about:
- Heart failure or significant heart conditions (excessive fluid can stress the heart)
- Severe kidney disease (kidneys may not handle additional fluid)
- Severe high blood pressure that is uncontrolled
- Lactated Ringers should not be used with certain blood transfusions or specific medications
- Any history of fluid retention issues
For healthy adults, IV fluids are remarkably safe.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the IV fluid called normal saline?
"Normal" refers to the salt concentration matching the salt content of your blood (0.9 percent). It does not mean it is the most common or default choice; it means it is isotonic with blood.
Will I feel cold when the IV fluid runs?
Some clients feel a cool or cold sensation in the arm where the IV is. This is because the fluid is at room temperature, which is cooler than your body. Some clients prefer warmed fluids; tell your nurse if you would like the bag warmed before infusion.
How fast does the fluid go in?
Most wellness drips run over 30 to 45 minutes for a full liter. The Zen Cocktail with NAD+ runs slower, typically 60 to 90 minutes. Your nurse can adjust the rate based on your comfort.
How much fluid is in a typical IV?
Most of our drips are 1 liter (roughly 33 ounces, or about 4 cups of water). This is far more than you could drink during the same time period.
Will an IV fix my dehydration?
If you are mildly to moderately dehydrated, yes. Severe dehydration may need more than one liter or medical evaluation. Most cases of typical dehydration respond well to a single IV.
Can I drink water during or after the drip?
Yes, both. Drinking water alongside the drip is fine. After the drip, continue drinking water to maintain hydration.
Is IV fluid better than drinking water?
For acute hydration needs (hangover, illness recovery, post-exercise), IV is faster and more effective. For daily hydration maintenance, water is fine and more affordable.
Will the IV make me need to urinate a lot?
Yes, you will likely need to urinate more in the hours after a drip as your kidneys filter and process the fluid. This is normal.
Why do you use saline instead of just water?
Pure water cannot be safely given by IV because it would cause cells to swell and burst. The salt content of normal saline matches your blood's natural chemistry.
Are normal saline and Lactated Ringers safe during pregnancy?
Both are commonly used during pregnancy in clinical settings, including hospital labor and delivery. We require OB/GYN clearance for any pregnant client.
Can I get an IV if I have heart problems?
Heart conditions require medical clearance. Excessive fluid can stress the heart in some conditions. Tell our medical provider during intake about any heart history.
Is one liter the right amount for me?
For most healthy adults, one liter is appropriate. People with very low body weight, certain medical conditions, or specific situations may benefit from less. Our medical provider can adjust during intake if needed.
How long does the hydration last?
Direct hydration effects last 6 to 24 hours, depending on activity level and other factors. The benefits to skin, energy, and recovery often last longer.
Can I get just IV fluids without any vitamins or medication?
Our Hydration IV is the simplest option, with just IV fluids plus light electrolyte support (Magnesium and B Complex). It is the most affordable option for clients who mainly want hydration.
Are the nurses experienced with IV insertion?
Yes. Every Zen IV Spa nurse is a licensed registered nurse (RN) with extensive IV experience. All treatments are also overseen by a licensed nurse practitioner or medical provider.
