Small Mineral, Big Impact

Zinc is one of the most important minerals you have probably never thought about. It is involved in the function of more than 300 enzymes, the activity of countless immune cells, and the production of dozens of essential proteins. And yet, like magnesium, it is one of the most common nutrient gaps in modern diets.

Zinc has gotten more attention in recent years because of its role in immune function, especially during cold and flu season. Studies have shown that zinc supplementation can shorten the duration of colds when started early. The challenge is that oral zinc has absorption limits and can cause stomach upset at higher doses.

This page covers what zinc actually does, who is at risk for low levels, what zinc IV therapy can support, and how to decide if it is right for you

What Is Zinc?

Zinc is an essential mineral required for hundreds of body processes. Your body does not store much zinc, so you need a steady supply from food. The recommended daily allowance is 8 to 11 milligrams for adults.

Zinc is found in animal products (meat, shellfish, dairy, eggs) at higher concentrations than in plant foods. Plant sources include legumes, seeds, nuts, and whole grains, but they also contain phytates that reduce zinc absorption. This makes zinc deficiency more common in vegetarians and vegans without careful planning.

Different forms of zinc supplements have different absorption characteristics:

  • Zinc picolinate (well absorbed, popular in supplements)
  • Zinc citrate (well absorbed, gentler on stomach)
  • Zinc gluconate (commonly used in cold remedies)
  • Zinc oxide (less well absorbed)
  • Zinc sulfate (used in IV preparations)

What Zinc Does in Your Body

Premium IV Drips Tailored to Your Wellness Goals

Zinc plays roles in the production and function of several hormones, including testosterone, insulin, and thyroid hormones.

Zinc is concentrated in the eye and supports vision health. Age-related macular degeneration research has linked zinc to retinal health.

Zinc supports brain function and is involved in neurotransmitter regulation. Mild zinc deficiency may contribute to cognitive symptoms in some people.

Zinc supports both male and female reproductive function. Sperm production depends on adequate zinc availability.

Zinc is critical for the development and function of immune cells. It supports the activity of neutrophils, natural killer cells, and T-cells. Mild zinc deficiency, which is common in the U.S., can reduce immune response to infection.

Several studies have shown that zinc supplementation can shorten the duration of a common cold by 1 to 2 days when started within 24 hours of symptoms appearing. The mechanism likely involves zinc's role in immune cell function and possibly direct effects on rhinoviruses (the main cold virus).

Zinc is required for the synthesis of new tissue during wound healing. Zinc deficiency slows healing and can lead to chronic wounds. Some surgeons recommend zinc support during surgical recovery.

Zinc supports skin health and is involved in skin cell turnover. Zinc deficiency can contribute to dry, irritated, or slow-to-heal skin. Some dermatologists recommend zinc for certain skin conditions.

Hair follicles use zinc for healthy growth. Zinc deficiency can contribute to hair loss and brittle hair.

Zinc is required for normal taste and smell. Zinc deficiency can cause loss of taste or altered taste perception. This is why some COVID and post-COVID protocols include zinc.

Zinc supports DNA synthesis and cellular division. This is why fast-replicating tissues (immune cells, skin, gut lining) are particularly affected by zinc deficiency.

Who Is at Risk for Low Zinc?

Vegetarians and Vegans

Plant sources of zinc are less bioavailable than animal sources. Long-term plant-based eaters can develop low zinc without careful dietary planning.

Older Adults

Zinc absorption decreases with age, and dietary intake often declines in older adults. About 1 in 4 adults over 60 may have suboptimal zinc levels.

Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women

Increased nutritional demands raise zinc needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

People on Certain Medications

Diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and some antibiotics can affect zinc levels.

People with Chronic Stress

Stress increases zinc loss through urine.

Athletes

Heavy sweating loses zinc. Athletes often need higher intakes than the recommended daily allowance.

If you have several of these symptoms, talk to a doctor about zinc testing.

Why IV Zinc Matters

Oral zinc has limits. At higher doses (above about 40 mg), oral zinc commonly causes stomach upset, nausea, and a metallic taste. Long-term high-dose oral zinc can also reduce copper absorption, leading to copper deficiency.

IV zinc bypasses these issues. The mineral goes directly into your bloodstream at concentrations that produce noticeable effects, without the GI side effects of oral high-dose zinc.

That said, for most people most of the time, oral zinc is sufficient. IV zinc is most useful for:

  • Specific high-need situations (during cold and flu season, before travel)
  • People with absorption issues
  • Higher doses than oral can deliver
  • Faster effects when needed
  • Combined with other immune-supporting nutrients in a single drip

Is Zinc IV Therapy Safe?

In standard wellness IV doses, zinc has a strong safety record.

Possible side effects:

  • Mild metallic taste during the drip
  • Mild stomach upset (rare with IV)
  • Headache (uncommon)

Long-term high-dose zinc (oral or IV) can reduce copper absorption, leading to copper deficiency. We use moderate IV doses appropriate for periodic supplementation, not extremely high doses that could cause copper imbalance.

Zinc IV therapy may not be ideal for clients with:

  • Active copper deficiency
  • Wilson's disease (a rare copper accumulation disorder)
  • Certain rare metabolic disorders

We screen during intake. Tell our medical provider about any conditions or medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will zinc IV cure my cold?

No. Zinc cannot cure a cold. Some research suggests it may shorten cold duration by 1 to 2 days when started early. The drip is supportive only

  • How fast does zinc work?

Zinc levels rise immediately during the IV. The downstream effects on immune function build over hours and days.

  • How often should I book zinc IV therapy?

During cold and flu season or before international travel, every 2 to 4 weeks is common. For general support, every 4 to 6 weeks works for most clients

  • How much does a zinc drip cost?

Mega Myers (highest zinc dose) is $399. Myers Cocktail is $299. Zen Cocktail is $399. There are no hidden travel fees in our standard service area.

  • Should I take oral zinc daily?

Most people can get adequate zinc from a balanced diet. If you are at higher risk for deficiency or have signs of low zinc, talk to your doctor about whether daily oral supplementation makes sense. The IV is for periodic high-dose support, not daily maintenance.

  • Is high-dose zinc safe?

In moderate IV doses for periodic supplementation, yes. Long-term high-dose oral zinc above 40 mg daily can cause copper deficiency. Our IV doses are moderate and not designed for daily use.

  • Will zinc IV help my acne?

Some research suggests zinc helps with acne. Many dermatologists recommend zinc for inflammatory acne. The drip is supportive only; severe or persistent acne should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

  • Can zinc help with hair loss?

Zinc supports hair growth, and zinc deficiency can contribute to hair loss. Replacing low zinc may help. Persistent hair loss has many possible causes and needs medical evaluation.

  • Will zinc IV give me energy?

Zinc itself does not produce a direct energy lift. The B vitamins and hydration in our drips do. Replacing low zinc may improve energy over time if zinc deficiency was contributing to fatigue.

  • Is zinc safe during pregnancy?

With OB/GYN clearance, zinc is generally appropriate during pregnancy. We require OB/GYN clearance for any pregnant client.

  • Will I taste the zinc?

Yes, many clients describe a metallic taste during the drip. This is normal and goes away after the drip ends.

  • Can zinc help with COVID or post-COVID symptoms?

Some research has looked at zinc as part of COVID protocols. Loss of taste and smell from COVID has been linked to zinc deficiency in some cases. The drip is supportive; for COVID treatment, see a doctor.

  • Are the nurses actual registered nurses?

Yes. Every Zen IV Spa nurse is a licensed registered nurse (RN). All treatments are also overseen by a licensed nurse practitioner or medical provider.

  • Can children get zinc IV therapy?

We treat children ages 12 and up at 100 lbs and up with parental consent and a parent or guardian present throughout the appointment.

  • Will zinc affect my copper levels?

Long-term high-dose zinc can reduce copper absorption. Our IV doses are moderate and used periodically, which is unlikely to cause copper deficiency in healthy adults. If you take oral zinc daily, talk to your doctor about copper status.
